What is rhinoplasty recovery like?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that modifies the appearance of the nose. Generally, the recovery period for rhinoplasty can be broken down into the following stages:

  1. Immediately after rhinoplasty surgery: After the procedure is complete, patients are monitored in a recovery room until the anesthesia wears off. At home that evening, you may experience some pain and discomfort in the nose and surrounding areas. Small amounts of bleeding or drainage from the nose are not uncommon.

  2. First week: During the first week, patients are advised to rest and avoid any strenuous physical activity. You will have a cast over your nose to protect it and help it heal properly. You may also experience bruising and swelling around the eyes and face, which can be managed with cold compresses. Pain is usually minimal, but you will be prescribed pain medication if necessary. What typically bothers patients most this week is nasal stuffiness and congestion. You will use saline spray throughout the week to help you clear out your nose. You should not blow your nose during this week.

  3. Second week: Your cast will be removed ~ 7 days after surgery. Your nose will be swollen, but you will still be able to see the improvements in the appearance! Patients typically return to work during this week. You are still advised to avoid strenuous activity, but can resume light activity. You will continue to use saline spray in the nose. You may still have a small amount of bruising that should resolve this week.

  4. Third week and beyond: By the third week, you will have recovered enough to resume normal activities, including exercise. However, you should still avoid any activities that may put pressure on or injure your nose, such as contact sports. At 4 weeks, you can start to wear glasses again (glasses are initially avoided to prevent putting pressure on the bridge of your nose).

It will take 6+ months for the swelling to fully subside and for you to see the final results of your rhinoplasty.
