Who is a Candidate for Buccal Fat Removal?

One surgery that has become more popular in recent years is buccal fat removal. It can be an ideal procedure for anyone with fuller cheeks who wants to slim down their facial appearance and enhance the contours of their face.

But are you a good candidate for the procedure? Let’s take a look at what the procedure entails and what makes someone an ideal candidate.

What is Buccal Fat Removal?

Buccal fat removal is a cosmetic procedure where an incision is made inside the mouth  and fat is removed from the inside of the cheeks. When this fat is removed, it results in a more contoured cheek area and facial profile.

The procedure is often used by individuals predisposed to have fat in this area due to genetics. All people have buccal fat, but some people accumulate more than others and want some of the fat removed.

What are the Benefits of Buccal Fat Removal?

The following benefits can be achieved with buccal fat removal:

  • A reduction in excess fat around the mouth and cheeks, also known as "chipmunk cheeks."

  • The creation of a more v-shaped lower facial contour.

  • Enhances the appearance of high cheekbones

  • Improves cheek and, potentially, jawline definition

  • Achieves overall facial harmony and balance

  • No visible signs of scarring because incisions are inside the mouth

Who is a Good Candidate for Buccal Fat Removal?

Whether you’re a good candidate for buccal fat removal depends on whether you have excess fat in and around the cheek area. In some cases, buccal fat pads are large regardless of the individual's weight or size. In this instance, people opt for the surgery to help gain a slimmer and more defined face. If this is the case for you,  you may be an excellent candidate.

Ideal candidates for this procedure include those who are in generally good health, are nonsmokers, and have realistic expectations. At your consultation with Dr. Misch, she will talk you through the process, look over your medical history, examine your face, and then determine if it’s the right procedure for you.

What to Expect with Buccal Fat Removal

During the buccal fat removal procedure, a local anesthetic will first be applied to numb the area and ensure you’re completely comfortable. Dr. Misch will then make a small incision inside the mouth on both sides of your face. This exposes the buccal fat pads. From there, she will then cut and remove the fat pads. The incisions will then be closed with sutures.

After the procedure, you will likely feel some swelling and facial soreness. Swallowing food may also be a problem. Dr. Misch will prescribe pain medications to help manage any discomfort. You may also want to stick to softer foods as you recover.

Additionally, it’s recommended to take at least a few days off work to heal and recover. After about two to three weeks, the swelling should be resolving and the results will be beginning to show!
