Knowing Rhinoplasty Options: Surgical vs Non-Surgical

Rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure that adjusts the structure and shape of your nose. This treatment can be an excellent opportunity for patients who want to correct breathing problems, restore their nose after an injury, or change their nose's appearance to reach their aesthetic goals.

Traditional rhinoplasty is a surgery that can have a longer recovery time. In some cases, non-surgical rhinoplasty is a better alternative. If you are considering rhinoplasty, you should understand the difference between surgical and non-surgical procedures, as well as the pros and cons of both options.

The Difference Between Surgical and Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Surgical rhinoplasty involves manipulating the bone, cartilage, and skin around your nose to change its shape and structure. Your surgeon may access the underlying structures through your nostrils, or they may make an incision in your septum. Depending on the goals of the treatment, your surgeon might either remove tissue or add tissue to your nose.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a less invasive procedure that involves injecting hyaluronic acid filler into your nose to change its shape. This option is usually recommended for patients who want to correct small bumps or asymmetries. Over time, your body will absorb the filler, so the results are not permanent. This option will not improve the function (or breathing) of your nose.

The Benefits of Surgical Rhinoplasty

Surgical rhinoplasty can address a much wider variety of aesthetic goals than non-surgical rhinoplasty. It is completely customizable and Dr. Misch can perform multiple adjustments at once. Beyond the external appearance, surgical rhinoplasty can also treat many structural and functional problems in the nose. For example, surgical rhinoplasty may improve your breathing, strengthen your sense of smell, and even change the tone of your voice. A deviated septum can only be fixed via surgery.

The Benefits of Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Many patients opt for non-surgical rhinoplasty because it has an easier recovery than the surgical procedure. You do not have to undergo general anesthesia and your surgeon does not even have to make an incision. Although you will experience swelling and bruising after the procedure, you can go back to your normal activities soon after the treatment.

The final results will be apparent instantly, however, the results of a non-surgical rhinoplasty are temporary, so you will likely eventually need a touch-up. This also means, however, that the results are far easier to reverse if you are not happy with what you see.

Deciding Which Procedure Is Right

During your consultation, you and Dr. Misch should discuss both the surgical and non-surgical options to determine which is right for you. A surgical rhinoplasty may be necessary depending on your goals and on the structure of your nose. Non surgical rhinoplasty is most appropriate for patients who only seek to camouflage a small dorsal nasal hump. Significant asymmetries can typically not be treated with non surgical rhinoplasty.

Misch Facial Plastic Surgery offers both surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty procedures. Dr. Misch has extensive experience with facial plastic surgery and is proud to provide caring and compassionate treatment. If you're considering rhinoplasty, reach out to us today to schedule a consultation.
